Present Simple

the present simple has three main uses:


·
General Truths
used when mentioning:


· facts of science -> example: The earth is round

· facts of nature -> example: Everybody needs love
(indicates permanence)


· Habitual activity
used when mentioning:


·habits

·skills ------------> when we talk about these we usually use frequency adverbs.

·customs


Examples:
I usually work 9 to 5.
He often plays golf on Saturday.
We always eat dinner together.
Frequently, we have lunch out.
We never eat breakfast together.
(indicates permanence)


· Stative Verbs
used when talking about:


· thoughts

· attitudes


· emotion


Examples:
I think you are correct.

Common mistake: I am thinking that . . .

I forgot your birthday!

I love you.

I like your top!


used when talking about:


·states of "being"

·existence
Examples:
He is tired.
He seems tired.

He appears tired.


used for:
·possession-> I have a car.
·ownership-> This car belongs to me.


used for:

· senses
Examples:
The skunk smells bad.(He stinks!)

This soup tastes awful!

I see her looking at me all the time
